Notes for John Iles MANTELL
Found this email regarding John Mantell -
It looks as if he and his wife Susan had at least one child in the Gambia, a daughter named Laura about 1850. It is also possible that his wife died there and is buried there. As far as I know, Mantell Street in Banjul is namedafter him.
Also -
I may follow up your suggestion, simply out of curiosity about what happened
to John Mantell's wife. Also, since they married in 1838 and there was only
one child that I can find, born about 1850, it seemed unlikely that there
were no other children in those twelve years.

Since posting that query, I have managed to find more about him from a
published list of Barristers. This not only told me when he was born and
when he qualified, but alsoithat he had been the Chief Justice of the Gambia
for nearly 20 years.

Armed with this information, I found that he had been Knighted by Queen
Victoria for his service to Colonial Administration. So the broad outline of
my query is now complete.

Obituary from the Annual Register-1893
On the 12 of July, at Biarritz, aged 70, Sir John Iles Mantell, son of George Mantell, M.D. of Farringdon, Berks. Educated at Radley College; called to the bar at Middle Temple, 1837; Chief Justice, Gambi 1847-66; Stipendiary Magistrate for Manchester, 1869-85. Married, 1867, Elinor Knight, second daughter of Charles Hitchcock, M. D. of Devizes.
Notes for Elinor (Spouse 1)
In the 1871 census, Elinor is living in Lancashire, Worsley and the census says she is the wife of Sir J. I. Mantell. She has several servants living with her but John is not in the household.

In the 1891 census, John and Elinor are living in Clifton Gloucestershire. John's occupation is hard to read but it appears to be I. P. Knight Reh? Judge. Under that is written Barrister at Law. John must have been married before as his daughter Laura 40, is living in the house as well along with several servants.
