According to James Obit published on May 22, 1917 he migrated to this country and settled in Pleasant Grove township in Olmsted County Minnesota in 1864.  He lived there and farmed until about 1900 when he retired and moved to Rochester City, MN where he died.   
Prior to moving to Pleasant Grove he  lived in Clinton Iowa where he met and married his wife of many years, Elizabeth Gray.  They were married in 1857.  In 1854 James applied his "first papers" for naturalization. I've transcibed them here.  Although I can't find James in the earlier census, I did find him living in Pleasant Grove, MN in 1870.  He is a farmer and values his farm at $1200.  Living next door to him is his brother William and his family.  The 1880 census show James and Elizabeth still living in Pleasant Grove, although his brother has moved to Winona. 
The 1900 census show James, Elizabeth and daughter Minnie now living in Rochester, Olmsted, MN.  James states that he has been in the US since 1855 and Elizabeth sine 1844.  Elizabeth has borne 4 children of which 3 are living.  Neither James or Elizabeth are employed but daughter Minnie is employed as a nurse.
James was living with his daughter Minnie and son-in-law Wm James Thornton in the 1910 census.  They were living in Rochester City, Olmsted, MN

Elizabeth Gray was born in Dundee, Scotland in 1835.  She came to America in childhood and lived in the east with relatives until her marriage to Jame G. Meredith.
Elizabeth lived at the family home at 110 W. Second St. in Rochester until her death.
